Wicked Review: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Published: October 2013
Publisher: Pan Macmillan
Acquired: Digital copy

A coming-of-age tale of fanfiction, family, and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan.... But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she's really good at it. She and her twin, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fanfiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.

Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend; a fiction-writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world; a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words...and she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

Now, this book speaks volumes not only for me but for like all of the fangirls. The Simon Snow series in this book is based off on the Harry Potter series according to Rainbow Rowell.

(The lovely Rainbow Rowell.)

This book is exactly what I expected it to be: light yet very inspirational. It's simple and everyone can relate to it, whether you're frustrated writer or just someone who's looking for happiness or someone finding your worth, there are little bits and pieces of everyone in these pages.

The relationship of Cath and Wren are so similar to Sweet Valley Twins (created by Francine Pascal) Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield. I mean, siblings fight. And no matter what happens, they still love each other. This struck me close to home. The way Cath handled her feelings toward her sister no matter how shitty Wren became is very admirable and it makes want to hug her tight.

Reagan is just so sassy. She's my favorite here because she's no nonsense when it comes to Cath and her problems. She's everyone's best friend. She's brutally honest and she ain't giving shit about what anyone else says about her.

And let's not forget Levi, whom we all love and we dream to have as our boyfriend.

- He works at Starbucks
- He's handsome
- He's swoon-tastic
- He's JUST SO DAMN NICE
- He's loves Cath
- He's JUST...UGH!

"I choose you over everyone."

Rainbow Rowell writes books. Sometimes she writes about adults (ATTACHMENTS and LANDLINE). Sometimes she writes about teenagers (ELEANOR & PARK and FANGIRL). But she always writes about people who talk a lot. And people who feel like they're screwing up. And people who fall in love.

When she's not writing, Rainbow is reading comic books, planning Disney World trips and arguing about things that don't really matter in the big scheme of things.

She lives in Nebraska with her husband and two sons.
