Wicked Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

Series: The Selection #1

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

I have read this book last year and I only got the chance to review it today because the trilogy is over. There is so much to say about this book. America Singer is very refreshing to me. She's not selfless like other YA heroines. She's come from a relatively low caste because she is an artist. I don't understand why artists are just in the middle of the caste system when I think they should be higher, maybe a Four not a Five.

She has a boyfriend at the start of this book, Aspen Leger, who's in a lower caste than America, a Six. They were very beautiful together although it's a very typical relationship.

When America got Selected, she's thrust in the spotlight. She's not from the higher castes like Celeste, who's a Two or someone from an influential family like Elise. I just don't like how she's just too insecure for her own good. I mean, come on! Just get over it already!

Prince Maxon isn't that swoon worthy for me. I mean, who doesn't want to be married to a prince? That's like the ultimate dream! But, in this book, he was too bland for my taste. Well, in this book. I know a lot of people who love this book hated Aspen because he broke up with America now that she's Selected. It was a dick move for sure. But I knew deep down that he'd come back. And come back he did, as a soldier in the palace.

I recommend this book for all of you princess wannabes. I mean, no matter how cynical you are, I'm sure at one point in your life, you wished to be a princess. America is going to make one bad-ass princess for sure.
