Wicked Review: Burn For Burn by Jenny Han

Published: April 24, 2012
Publisher: Simon and Schuster Books For Young Readers
Series: Burn For Burn #1
Acquired: Paperback

Postcard-perfect Jar Island is the kind of place where nobody locks their doors at night, where parents can sleep easy, knowing their daughters are tucked away safe and sound in their beds.

But bad things can happen, even to good girls . . . and sometimes, the only way to make things right is to do something wrong.

Lillia used to trust boys, but not anymore. Not after what happened this summer. And she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her little sister from the same fate.

Kat is over the rumors, the insults, the cruel jokes made at her expense. It all goes back to one person--her ex-best friend. Someone needs to teach her a lesson, and, with Lillia and Mary behind her, Kat feels up to the task.

Four years ago, Mary left Jar Island because of a boy. But she’s not the same girl anymore. Now that she’s got friends who have her back, he's going to be in big trouble.

Three very different girls who come together to make things right. Will they go too far?

I keep hearing lots of good things about this series and how it's about revenge and some even say it's like a kiddie version of Gossip Girl. It kind of is. Three girls are out for revenge. Let's start with Lilia Cho, the Asian princess. She's a princess alright with her mansion and guys falling all over her and her best friend, Rennie, in tow. She and Rennie goes a long way back. They were a trio; Lilia, Kat, and Rennie. But, three is a crowd. Now, it's two's a company. Or something...

Mary Zane is the new girl in Jar Island High. Having come from school far away, she's nervous. She's very pretty but she has a traumatic experience. One involving a boy that she really liked.

Kat DeBrassio is the spunky bad girl who was once in the in crowd but stays in the background, silently plotting her revenge against one of her ex-bestfriends.

Now, who wouldn't want to read something like this, yeah?

This book got me on the edge. I thought I'd have a hard time reading a book with three point of views but it wasn't confusing to me. The minute I saw Kat's point of view, I fell in love with her. She's by far one of the most appealing to me. She's very...real, for lack of a better word. Mary is just the same as well, but I can't just seem to connect with her. Lilia is too out there for me.

Then at the ending, when they set out their revenge against Rennie and Reeve, I was clapping already.

I think the supernatural phenomenons in the book just made this book more versatile. I mean, I think without them this would turn into a bland contemporary book. I can't wait to get my hands on Fire With Fire!
